Kalkofen is the name of a vineyard in the small town of Deidesheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

Location, climate, soil

The lime kiln is a single site with an area of 4.8  hectares and part of the Forster Mariengarten large site . The location belongs to the Palatinate growing area and here again to the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstrasse area; it extends north of Deidesheim. The transition from the Palatinate Forest to the Lower Palatinate Lowland, known as Mittelhaardt, forms a foothill zone about one to two kilometers wide, where, due to Tertiary and Pleistocene deposits, light and fertile soils are predominant. The Haardt mountain range protects the vineyards from excessive rainfall in its leeward position, and the slope of the slope means that cold air masses can flow off to the Rhine plain on frosty spring nights and the vines usually do not freeze. The lime kiln is about 150  m above sea level. NHN and is 100% slightly dependent. Its soil consists of lime, loam, marly clay and isolated limestone pebbles.

legend

Vineyard wall in the location lime kiln with walled-in lintel

In earlier times, when there was great need in Deidesheim, a winemaker is said to have given a large vineyard here for three loaves of bread in order to be able to support his family. To commemorate this event, a stone is said to have been built into a wall on which three round loaves of bread were carved. A stone that corresponds to this description is found in the wall of the lime kiln; On closer inspection, however, it is a lintel , which is marked with the year 1551 and bears the coat of arms of the Schlieder von Lachen family . This family once had an estate in Deidesheim where the Ketschauer Hof is today. Possibly the wall here was built from rubble stones and the lintel became part of it.
