The Josef Biffar winery is located in the small town of Deidesheim in Rhineland-Palatinate in the German wine-growing region Pfalz .

history

In 1734 Jean Biffar moved from the Lyon area to Deidesheim; he was the first of the family to be involved in viticulture . The winery itself was built towards the end of the 19th century at its current location outside the city wall . The Biffar family ran the winery for four generations. It was a founding member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP) and belonged to it for many decades. In 2013, the owner Lilli Biffar-Hirschbil sold the winery to the oenologist Fumiko Tokuoka and her father, a beverage wholesaler from Osaka , who had leased the Reichsrat von Buhl winery in Deidesheim with other beverage dealers until 2013 . Before the sale, the vineyard area was 12  hectares . Deidesheim and Wachenheim vineyards were mainly cultivated .

The owner family Biffar also owned J. Biffar & Co GmbH, a company in the immediate vicinity of the winery, which was founded in 1890 and had to cease operations on July 31, 2016. Most recently it was the only company in Germany that produced candied and chocolate-coated fruits. This company was named after Josef Biffar.

The current main building of the J. Biffar Wein & Sekt GmbH company is the “Im Kathrinenbild” building about 100 meters from the estate. It was acquired by the Tokuoka family back in 2010.

The older of the two, Niederkircher Strasse 13, was built by Adam Biffar in 1879, a late Classicist , two-storey house that was built with Red sandstone was built. The stucco ceilings inside come from the time it was built. The neighboring villa in neo -renaissance style , Niederkircher Straße 15, was built in 1898/99 by Josef Biffar, who gave the winery and fruit preservation company its name. Its monogram is embedded in the top of the gable facing the street . A steep mansard roof rests on the two-story building with an irregular floor plan. A figure of St. George stands in a niche that can be seen from the street . The architect of the villa was Wilhelm Schulte I.
