Kataplexia is a Finnish brutal death metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 2003.

history

The band was founded in 2003 by Rodrigo Artiga from El Salvador . In the same year, the debut album Morgue's Reality (which was recorded by Artiga alone) was released, followed by the albums Catastrophic Scenes and Supreme Autority in 2005 and 2008, respectively . After several line-up changes, the group also consisted of the session drummer Timo Häkkinen in addition to the three original members. In 2008 the band took part in the Death Feast Open Air . After an EP in 2014 under the name Genetic Intervention , the box set Scenes of Supreme Reality , which consists of the first three albums , was released in 2017 . In addition to appearances in Finland, the band has so far also held concerts in Sweden , Germany and Spain .

style

Stefan Franke from voicesfromthedarkside.de assigned the band to Brutal Death Metal in his review of Morgue's Reality . The group combine contemporary singing of Grindcore and Death Metal in the style of Disavowed with straightforward old-school Death Metal. Occasionally there are fast as well as medium-fast passages in the style of old Dying Fetus and early suffocation . The music is unoriginal, but variable, whereby the group uses breaks , riffs that are not too technically demanding and an aggressive vocals. Johannes Schmuck from Metal.de wrote in his review of Catastrophic Scenes that you can hear extreme Death Metal on it. Occasionally, parallels to Nile and Suffocation can be heard. The band goes "in genre-typical phrases", where there is a lack of independence and you just try to sound brutal, which makes the music sound poorly varied. Overall, there is mostly only monotonous "stubborn beating", although there is "a lot of technical fiddling". Björn Backes from Powermetal.de also described the music of Genetic Intervention as Brutal Death Metal, which is not very different from the material of the previous albums. The songs sound influenced by American Death Metal and would be characterized by a brisk pace, double bass , a deeply tuned bass and "quite heartless grunts ". In the long run, however, the songs would be boring.
