Kate ( acronym for K EN A dvanced T ext E ditor) is a free text editor of KDE .

Kate is primarily suitable for programmers and system administrators , but also for more experienced users. In the program are syntax highlighting and code folding for a total of more than 200 programming languages such as C or C ++ and markup languages like HTML or XML integrated. It is possible to open many files at the same time and to create and manage projects. Kate also includes a built-in console , supports a variety of plug-ins and has a vi input mode. Encodings supported include ASCII , ISO 8859-1 , UTF-8 and UTF-16 .

Kate and KatePart

Kate's editor component, called KatePart, is designed as a KPart , which makes it possible to embed the editor in any other KDE application. Kate itself is thus an application that extends the KatePart editor component with further useful functions, such as searching and replacing in several files or the ability to open several files at once. The integrated development environment KDevelop and the web development program Quanta Plus are two well-known applications that also use KatePart as an editor component. Many other KDE applications also use KatePart, for example the archiving program Ark for displaying previews of text files. KWrite is also based on KatePart.

Others

A mode is available for Kate, which enables the editing of texts in the wiki syntax . With the help of an XML file, a distinction is made between HTML tags and entities, wiki control characters, links, headings, tables and <nowiki> sections.
