Kate Markowitz (born April 28, 1956 in Los Angeles , California ), better known in German-speaking countries by her stage name Kate Yanai , is an American singer.

Kate Markowitz is the daughter of the well-known film music composer Richard Markowitz . She actually works as a background singer for numerous well-known artists. When she was in Europe in 1988 during a tour of France with France Gall , she used a day off to record a one-minute piece of music to accompany a commercial for Bacardi rum.

The catchy melody, which was also shown very often on television, soon enjoyed great popularity and was eventually even recorded and played by DJs. Then it was decided to make a real single out of the song. The French composer Olivier Bloch-Lainé then rewrote the song and, together with the reactivated Kate Markowitz, gave it an ad-free summer text. Kate called herself Yanai, a name from her family tree, the song with the new title Summer Dreaming (Bacardi Feeling) was recorded and in September 1991 became a summer hit in German-speaking countries.

Despite or because of the hype that Kate was exposed to after the success of Summer Dreaming , she did not agree to an offered record deal and a solo career of her own. In mid-1994 she released another recording with Cry, Cry, Louise , but the single was a flop with number 61. So it remains a one-hit wonder limited to the German-speaking countries . However, she released the CD Map of the World with self-written songs in the USA in 2003 under her real name .

Kate Markowitz mainly works in the background on tours and recordings of famous artists. She was and can be heard with James Taylor , to whose regular cast she belongs, with Shawn Colvin , kd lang , Randy Newman , Don Henley , Billy Joel , Lee Ritenour and Graham Nash .

In 2012 the title Summer Dreaming was re-recorded in a cover version by Kelly Rowland and also used by Bacardi as a promotional song.
