The name Ingeburg arose from the combination of the name of the Germanic tribal god Ingwio and the Old High German burg for castle, protection. The name means something like "the guardian", "the protected".

The popularity of the name Ingeburg in Germany rose sharply at the beginning of the 20th century. From the early 1920s to the early 1930s, it was one of the ten most popular girls' names. From the fifties onwards, its distribution fell sharply, and it has hardly been awarded since the late sixties.
