The name Inge comes from Old High German . The name element Ingo goes back to Ing / Ingwio , the name of the Germanic deity Yngvi .

The name Inge quickly gained popularity in Germany in the 1910s. During the thirties he was one of the ten most popular girl names. Then its popularity sank, since the late sixties hardly any girls have been called Inge.
