Kateryna Handsjuk

Kateryna Viktorivna Handsjuk ( Ukrainian Катерина Вікторівна Гандзюк ; born June 17, 1985 in Cherson , Ukrainian SSR ; † November 4, 2018 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian civil rights activist who exposed corruption in her hometown of Kherson and fell victim to an acid .

Life

Handsyuk studied at the Kherson State University between 2002 and 2006. She graduated from the National Economic University in Kiev in 2008 and the National Academy of Public Administration ( Національна академія державного управління при Президентові України ) in Kiev in 2016 . She was a member of the Kherson Oblast Regional Council and the Kherson City Council as well as adviser to the Mayor of Kherson. She was seen as a critic of the security authorities and above all condemned corruption in the regional interior ministry. She had made the police involvement in several corruption cases public.

At the end of July 2018, a man showered her with sulfuric acid in front of her house and fled. She suffered severe burns on more than 30 percent of her body. The Ukrainian authorities reportedly arrested five men. EU enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn wrote on Twitter: “Attacks on civil society activists are unacceptable. Those responsible for this insidious crime must be held accountable. "

Handsjuk died on November 4, 2018. According to preliminary information, the cause of death was a thrombosis . The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko confirmed in the evening of the same day the death of Handsjuk in a Kiev hospital. He asked the police to do everything possible to investigate the case.

After the news of the death, a spontaneous mourning rally took place in the Ukrainian capital, at which hundreds of demonstrators marched in front of the Interior Ministry and demanded that the murder be fully investigated.

In mid-February 2019, the chairman of the Kherson Regional Council , Wladyslaw Manher ( Владислав Миколайович Мангер ) was arrested. The law enforcement authorities accuse him of having commissioned the attack.
