Christa Katharina Spieß

Christa Katharina Spieß (* 1966 ) is a professor ( W3 ) for family and educational economics at the Free University of Berlin , where she teaches economics .

Life

Christa Katharina Spieß graduated from the University of Mannheim with a degree in economics and political science in 1992 . She then worked as a research assistant at the chair for social policy and public economy at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where she received her doctorate in 1996 with the subject of “State intervention in childcare markets. Theory and empiricism in a German-American comparison ".

From 1997 to 2000 she worked as a project manager in the “Politics and Society” department of Prognos AG in Basel and Berlin, and from 2000 to 2012 as a research assistant in the department “Longitudinal study of socio-economic panel” (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin . In February 2005, she completed her habilitation at the Faculty of Economics at the Technical University of Berlin.

In July 2006 she was appointed professor (W3) for family and educational economics at the Free University of Berlin, in cooperation with the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). At this point in time, she had been researching the topic of family and educational economics in early childhood for over ten years, making her one of the pioneers in this field in Germany. Spieß had previously been offered a professorship in "Educational Governance" (W3) at the Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and a professorship in "Economics of Social Policy" (W2) at the University of Bremen, but had both turned down.

Since 2012 she has switched to the Faculty of Economics at the Free University of Berlin and has been Professor of Educational and Family Economics there. This was realized in the form of an S professorship in cooperation with the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) Berlin. She continues to work at DIW, since 2012 as head of the "Education and Family" department.

Spieß had numerous research stays at home and abroad, for example at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Institute (NIDI) in The Hague, at the Free University of Amsterdam , and at the Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University in Syracuse (USA) and at Cornell University in Ithaca (USA). She was a member of the Expert Commission for the Seventh Family Report of the Federal Government and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

Focus of work

C. Katharina Spieß's main focus is on issues of social policy , primarily in the area of ​​family and educational economics.

In the debate about expanding childcare in Germany , Spieß pointed to the economic benefits of such an expansion and pleaded for demand-oriented financing of day-care facilities.
