Katharina Westerhorstmann (* 1974 in Paderborn ) is a Roman Catholic theologian and university professor .

biography

After studying German, Catholic theology, economic policy and applied cultural studies from 1994 to 1997 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster graduated Westerhorstmann at the Theological Faculty of Paderborn from 1997 to 2001 the study of theology and philosophy , she with the graduate theologian graduated . She then began a doctoral degree, which was funded from 2002 by a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. 2003–2008 Westerhorstmann was a research assistantat the theological faculty in Paderborn at the chairs for moral theology and ethics as well as systematic philosophy and has been independently active in university teaching since 2004. During this time in 2004 she got into the work Pro-Existence and Self-Realization. Being a woman in work and profession with Edith Stein in comparison with feminist and church positions for a doctorate in theology (Dr. Theol.). From 2005 to 2008 she worked as a research assistant at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn and as the managing director of the Catholic Theological Faculty Conference.

In 2008 she moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , where she was the first academic director of the Interdisciplinary Ethics Center. At the same time, she held teaching positions in practical philosophy with a focus on ethics at the Philosophical Department of the University of Freiburg until 2013.

2013–2014 Westerhorstmann was a lecturer for philosophy / ethics at the University of Paderborn . Until 2014 she was also a research assistant at the moral theological seminar of the Rheinische Wilhelms University in Bonn. There he completed his habilitation in moral theology in 2014 with a thesis on the double commandment of love in Judeo-Christian dialogue. The work was published in 2014 under the title Das Liebesgebot as a gift and a mandate. Moral theology in the light of the Judeo-Christian dialogue published by Schöningh-Verlag in Paderborn in the series Studies on Judaism and Christianity (Vol. 29). Also in 2014, Westerhorstmann received a research grant from the Minerva Foundation for research at the Martin Buber Archive of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This was followed by a substitute professorship in moral theology at the University of Bonn for two semesters.

In December 2015 she released her debut album "When your beauty touches my heart ..." on the indie label Timezone (Osnabrück). The album with self-composed songs in the singer-songwriter style from the field of Christian pop was released in spring 2016 in its second edition. The second CD entitled "You have seen me" with 12 new songs by the Paderborn musician was released in December 2016 as a band version by Timezone.

From April 2016 to March 2018 she was professor for moral theology at the Catholic University in Eichstätt (substitute professor). Westerhorstmann held a visiting professorship in Uppsala (Sweden) in the 2018 summer semester.

Katharina Westerhorstmann's publications range from her dissertation on the question of women in Edith Stein's philosophical work (2004) and her habilitation on understanding the commandment of love in moral theology and Jewish religious philosophy (2014) to medical-ethical essays on topics such as cosmetic surgery (2009), organ donation (2018) and the accompaniment at the end of life as well as the ethics of values. The academic processing of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church by clerics has been a further focus of her research in addition to medical ethics for a number of years and, since 2018, her publication activity.

From August 2019 to May 2020 she was visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame research university in the state of Indiana (USA).

In April 2020 she accepted a call from the Franciscan University of Steubenville ( Ohio , USA) for the campus in Gaming (A), where she is Full Professor of Theology.
