The Katharinenkapelle in Külsheim is a Gothic chapel that was built between 1439 and 1444.

history

The Katharinenkapelle, built in the 15th century, was donated by Canon Georg Birser, who came from Külsheim. He served as Chancellor of the Wittelsbach rulers of his time. The chapel is dedicated to the early Christian martyr Catherine . On the Sunday before the birth of Mary in 1444, Auxiliary Bishop Herrmann inaugurated the finished chapel in honor of St. Catherine.

In 2014/15 the chapel was completely renovated.

Certificate

Georg Birser was also the canon of St. Johann in Regensburg. This is what a document in the parish archive proves.

The certificate says:

“I, Johannes Mantel, rector of the parish church in Külsheim” (St. Martin) “in the Mainz diocese, announce the present, like the venerable Georg Birser, chancellor of Duke Heinrich, inflamed by the fervor of burning piety, to close a chapel To honor the holy virgin and martyr Katharina in the city of Külsheim to increase the divine cult and to give a fund and to begin with. "

Chapel building and equipment

The Katharinenkapelle was built in the Gothic style.

There are three altars inside the chapel: an altar of Mary, an altar of Our Lady and an altar of Sebastian. The choir has valuable frescoes depicting the life of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The chancel is adorned with the altar shrine of the Three Kings. The windows complete the gem. A sculptor from Külsheim created the figure of Catherine above the entrance.

Above the entrance door is the statue of St. Catherine of Alexandria by the well-known Külsheim sculptor Julius Seitz, who depicts Catherine with a book, a broken wheel and a sword. She is one of the 14 helpers in need who are still venerated in the Franconian region and therefore also belongs to the three holy virgins.
