Street Chapel (Külsheim)
The street chapel (also Balze Ries chapel ) in Külsheim in the Main-Tauber district was built in 1727.
location
The chapel is located on Panzerstraße of the former training area of the Prinz-Eugen-Kaserne . Access to the chapel is only allowed on Sundays, as it is located on military grounds. Since the closure of the Külsheim barracks, the permission of the site commander of the barracks in Hardheim has to be obtained for special cases.
history
In 1727, Balthasar "Balze" Ries from Külsheim donated the street chapel. This is noted in an inscription above the door frame. After Külsheim became a Bundeswehr base in 1964 and a training area was set up outside the Prinz Eugen barracks, the chapel was on military grounds. From then on, the traditional association took over the maintenance of the chapel with the support of the “Street Chapel Memorial” foundation.
Chapel building and equipment
The chapel is usually closed and only open for memorial services. A memorial was erected on the street chapel for the fallen soldiers of the former 14th Panzer Division. In addition to the memorial, there are also several wayside crosses in the chapel , including the well-known “Hohe Herrgott”, which gave the Külsheim wine its name.
