Katharinenstrasse 3 (Leipzig)
The house at Katharinenstraße 3 (in older sources also Oertel's house ) is a residential and commercial building in downtown Leipzig . It is one of the few surviving witnesses of the Baroque in Leipzig and is a listed building .
architecture
The five-storey house is only 15 meters wide with five window axes facing Katharinenstrasse . Above the shop area with two large shop windows, there are two floors with higher room heights than the upper two floors.
The central axis is emphasized by a convex, three-storey box bay, the floor of which shows a shell shape. It has a small balcony above its third floor. The window parapets of the first three upper floors are decorated with festoons . The windows on the first and second floors have different artistic crowns . The mansard roof has two rows of dormers . In the back of the house, windows open onto the courtyards of the neighboring properties.
history
The house was built in 1709 by the Leipzig master carpenter Johann Christian Schmidt, but was acquired by the merchant Theodor Oertel the following year. By the beginning of the 20th century, it had lost some of its baroque architectural decorations and had undergone renovations in the upper area.
In the Second World War , it was only slightly damaged next to the totally destroyed Alte Waage . In the extensive renovation completed in 1996, the original condition from the time it was built was largely restored.
