history

The chapel of a hermitage already stood on the site of the cathedral in 1575. The construction of the current church was started in 1704 by the priest Antonio Flores de Acevedo and finished in 1738 by the pastor Manuel Colón de Larreátegui. In 1899 the church was elevated to a cathedral with the creation of the diocese. 1949 awarded Pope Pius XII. the cathedral also has the title of a minor basilica. The second tower was only added between 1943 and 1946.

architecture

The original layout was designed on the plan of a Latin cross with a single nave and a transept. After being elevated to the status of a cathedral, the architect Refugio Reyes Rivas extended it to three naves to form a basilica . The predominant style is baroque, the gable above the entrance shows the transition to classicism. The main facade in pink quarry stone is characteristic.

Main facade

The facade is divided into three structures and three floors. It was created in the New Spanish Baroque. The shafts of the columns are carved with plant motifs. In the four external niches are the sculptures of the four doctors of the church. At the top of the access arch there is a picture of the Archangel Michael.

inner space

In addition to the crossing dome, there are two smaller domes in the side aisles. The interior Ionic columns are decorated in a classical style. The original three baroque altarpieces have been replaced by classical altars. The image of the Madonna of the Assumption, patroness of the city and the diocese of Aguascalientes, was brought from Spain in 1919 to replace the old image.

In the apse there is a polychrome carved wooden statue of St. Johann Nepomuk . The sides of the sacrament chapel are gold and blue. In the central nave is the pulpit with a sound cover ; A tubular wooden organ stands out in the choir. In 2005 Fratelli Ruffatti installed her first pipe organ in Latin America here.
