The Cathedral of Fabriano or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Venantius ( Italian Cattedrale di Fabriano, Basilica Cattedrale di San Venanzio ) is a church in Fabriano in the Italian region of Marche . The Cathedral of the Diocese of Fabriano-Matelica is dedicated to St. Venantius of Camerino and has the title of minor basilica .

history

After a first documentary mention in 1047, Bishop Guglielmo moved the baptistery to San Venanzio in 1253. After changes around 1260, the church in the area of the apse and the gallery was expanded in the second half of the 14th century . At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the church was partially rebuilt by the architect Muzio Oddi (1607–1617) from Urbino. The valuable stucco interior by Francesco Selva from Ticino comes from this phase. The polygonal apse, the cloister and the chapel of San Lorenzo have been preserved from the 14th century building. The new building was consecrated in 1663. With the creation of the diocese in 1728, the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral. The last intervention in the structure was demolished for reasons of stability in 1825 and replaced by the current one according to plans by Ermogaste Bonfili. In 1963 the cathedral was given by Pope Paul VI. awarded the title of a minor basilica.

Building

The central part of the brick facade of the church is much larger and higher than the two side parts. It is divided into two floors, overlaid by a carved marble cornice and terminated at the top with a pediment without decorations. A large arched window opens in the middle of the upper band. On the lower floor, the middle of the three portals is framed by a triangular tympanum on two half-columns. The facade is decorated with Doric pilasters in the lower band and Ionic pilasters in the upper band. The exterior of the apse of the cathedral is in the Gothic style. At their side is the bell tower.

The single-nave cathedral has the plan of a Latin cross. It is roofed with a barrel vault with stitch caps , which are illuminated by rectangular windows. A hanging dome rises above the choir . On each side of the nave there are five rectangular chapels from the 17th century with altars, the barrel vaults are covered with coffered ceilings . In the two arms of the transept there are two more chapels, on the right the one for John the Baptist , on the left an All Saints Chapel , both decorated with frescoes by Giuseppe Bastiani. The raised choir has a high altar with an antependium , behind which there is an old crucifix. Along the perimeter of the apse are the wooden choir stalls and on the right the bishop's chair. The choir stalls give access to the San Lorenzo Chapel with frescoes by Allegretto Nuzi, probably from 1365.
