The Cathedral of Kielce and the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption ( Polish Bazylika Katedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Kielcach ) is a Roman Catholic church in Kielce , Poland . The cathedral of the Diocese of Kielce is consecrated under the patronage of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church was built in the twelfth century by the Krakow Bishop Gedko on Castle Hill in the city center. In 1213 it became a collegiate church . After being destroyed by the Tatars in 1260, it was rebuilt. In 1583 Archbishop Piotr Myszkowski extended the nave to the west. In 1719, Bishop Kazimierz Lubienski had the building redesigned in the early Baroque style that is still influential today . From 1805 to 1818 and since 1883 the church has been a cathedral. It received the title of a minor basilica in 1971 as part of the 800th anniversary celebration by Pope Paul VI. In 1990 Pope John Paul II crowned the image of Our Lady of Grace , which had come to the church around 1600.

Building

The bell tower, together with the towers of the neighboring bishop's palace, dominates the city. The three naves were designed by Krakow painters in the 19th century with frescoes in different colors, which compensated for the poor lighting in the medieval windows. The high altar, the work of Fontana , is also designed in the Baroque and Rococo styles. The tomb of aristocrat Zebrzydowska, carved from alabaster, has the greatest artistic importance .
