The Santa Ana Cathedral stands in the middle of Vegueta, the oldest part of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . The two-tower building is the oldest and largest church on the island and episcopal church of the Canary Islands diocese . The most important archive of the Canaries belongs to the cathedral .

history

In 1497, shortly after the conquest of Gran Canaria by Castilian troops, construction began. The Catholic Kings thus set a sign of their victory over the indigenous people who were to be proselytized. After the completion of the first construction phase in 1570, construction work was suspended for over 200 years.

Until 1819, Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the only cathedral in the Canary Islands. In 1819 the Canary Islands were divided into two dioceses. The previous parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios in San Cristóbal de La Laguna became the cathedral of a new diocese that extends over the western islands.

Architectural styles

The cathedral is a three-aisled hall church , a mixture of different architectural styles. The rear part of the interior of the church and the chapels of the left aisle are in the Gothic style . However, since the construction time spanned almost four centuries, the following architectural styles were also used: The right aisle dates from the Renaissance period , the San Fernando Chapel from the Baroque era , and the dome from the historicism period . The classical west facade was built according to plans by the sculptor and architect Luján Pérez .

inner space

The hall, supported by bundle pillars, consists of three naves with side chapels. The crossing is vaulted by a low dome, a transept is only hinted at. The ribs of the ribbed vault show intricately entwined shapes. The vault of the choir apse dates from the period between the late Gothic and Renaissance. It suggests a shell shape.

Furnishing

  • The figures of the 12 apostles stand under the crossing dome . They come from Luján Pérez.
  • In the right side chapel there is the sculpture “La Dolorosa” (The Sorrowful), also by Luján Pérez.
  • Paintings by Cristóbal de Quintana and Juan de Miranda
  • The St. Joseph's Chapel (Capilla de San José) contains the tomb of José Viera y Clavijo .
