The Cathedral of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple in the Hungarian city of Hajdúdorog is the episcopal church of the Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Hajdúdorog . Here the Byzantine rite is mainly celebrated in the Hungarian language . The Hungarian Greek Catholic Church is united with the Roman Catholic Church and recognizes the Pope as head.

history

The origins of the church go back to 1312 when the first place of worship was mentioned here. The building was destroyed during the Turkish siege. The current structure dates from the 17th century. With the establishment of its own diocese in 1912, Pope Pius X made it a cathedral. The reason why a cathedral was consecrated in this small place is due to the fact that around 80% of the inhabitants of this place are Greek-Catholic Heiducken , who were settled here in the 17th century. To this day, the cathedral is decisive for everyday life in the small town. It was not until the restoration in 1876 that the church got its present appearance, during which it was also converted into a three-aisled basilica . Various baroque elements were removed and replaced by eclectic ones.

Furnishing

The structure is 38 meters long and 21 meters wide, the tower 48 meters high and not, as usual, the oldest part of the church. In 2010 the old tower clock was replaced.

The eleven-meter-high and seven-meter-wide iconostasis that separates the lay house from the choir, completed in 1816 , comprises 54 icons and is considered one of the most important in Hungary. The version was carried out by Miklós Jankovits , the pictures are by Mátyás Hittner and János Szücs . In contrast to the Roman rite, an altar is not just the altar table, but the entire space separated by the iconostasis.

The iconostasis, the main altar, the side altars, the pulpit and the bishop's throne are made in the Baroque style. The first and for a long time the only fresco by an unknown artist from 1780 shows the Trinity. Only after the restoration in 1876 were others added, such as “The Last Supper” and “The Descent from the Cross”. During the restoration in 1937, however, the Byzantine frescoes were whitewashed with new neo-baroque frescoes of inferior quality. The entire facility, including the iconostasis, was painted oil green. After the Second World War , the National Bureau of Cultural Property awarded the 1937 restoration of inferior quality, which is why the newer frescoes were removed again. During socialism , the church was left to decay and it was not until the mid-1980s that tentative maintenance work was carried out. A comprehensive restoration took place from 2000.
