Katherine Roberts Maher (born April 18, 1983 in Wilton , Connecticut ) is an American manager . Since 2016 she has been the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco , California .

education

Katherine Maher studied from 2002 to 2003 at the Arabic Language Institute of the Egyptian American University in Cairo . From 2003 to 2005 she completed an honors bachelor's degree in Islamic and Oriental Studies at New York University with a semester abroad at the Institut Français d'Etudes Arabes in Damascus .

Career

After completing her studies, she initially dealt with human rights and democracy work. After internships at the Council on Foreign Relations and the Eurasia Group, Maher began working in 2005 as part of her international manager development program at HSBC in London, Germany and Canada. From 2007 to 2010 she was a founding member of the UNICEF innovation team, which developed strategies for health services, communication, promotion and organization of young people through new information and communication technologies.

From 2010 to 2011 she worked at the National Democratic Institute and from 2013 to 2014 at the network organization AccessNow.org .

Wikimedia Foundation

At the Wikimedia Foundation, Maher was Chief Communications Officer responsible for public relations and press work since April 2014 . After the departure of Lila Tretikov , she took over her duties as managing director of the foundation from March 2016, initially on a temporary basis . On the sidelines of the Wikimania conference in Esino Lario , Italy , the Foundation's Board of Trustees announced on June 23, 2016 that the position had been permanently transferred to her.
