Kathrin Altwegg (born December 11, 1951 in Balsthal ) is a Swiss astrophysicist , associate professor at the University of Bern, project manager of the Rosina mass spectrometer and former director of the Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern .

biography

Kathrin Altwegg originally wanted to become an archaeologist. After graduating from high school in Solothurn in 1970 , she was the only woman in her class to study physics at the University of Basel . In 1980 she did her doctorate at the University of Basel under the physics professor Iris Zschokke . After two years in New York , she became an assistant in space research and planetology at the University of Bern in 1982 . In 1996 she completed her habilitation in the field of solar system . In the same year she became head of the Rosina project , which aims to study the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko . The project includes several instruments that the probe Rosetta of the European Space Agency were installed.
