She has illustrated texts by Lorenz Pauli in thirteen of her books so far . A specialty is Schärer's 2006 illustrated picture book Bill and Fabienne - Two water rats and a lot of water power ( Bill et Fabienne - Deux rats d´eau et beaucoup d´energie ), which is written in two languages - German and French. Her latest books are We All (Text: Lorenz Pauli), 10 Wünsche (Text: Lorenz Pauli) and The Heart of the Doll (Text: Rafik Schami ). In 2013, 3 cheeky mice by Lorenz Pauli and Are you afraid? Asked Rafik Schami's mouse , who will illustrate it.

In October 2010 the play When the Fox and the Rabbit Say Goodnight, based on their book of the same name (2004), will premiere at the Stadelhofen Theater, performed by the Gustavs Schwestern SOLO theater. The press read about the play:

“What Sibylle Grüter (equipment and game) and Christin Glauser (director) conjure up on the tiny stage with simple means and great attention to detail is a miniature cosmos bursting with imagination, in which the little things get big and great heroes can sometimes be small. "

Animal stories are at the center of Schärer's illustrated work. She herself said in an interview in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in 2008 : “In my picture books there are almost only animal figures. Animals can bar their teeth, big ears, erect hair and tails. With human faces, on the other hand, emotions quickly reach their limits: a face contorted with anger can be repulsive, while animals tend to be more sympathetic. The surface area is also a problem with the human face. What do you do with so much skin? An animal has fur markings, it has wrinkles or folds. "

Kathrin Schärer's pictures were selected for the Swiss contribution to the Illustration Biennale in Bratislava in 2005 and 2007. In 2010 she received a nomination for the German Youth Literature Prize for her book Johanna im Zug . In 2012 she was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for her complete oeuvre. Your book brave, brave has sold more than 50,000 copies to date. Schärer's successes not only in German-speaking countries, but also abroad. Her picture book When the Fox and the Rabbit Say Goodnight have sold more than 64,000 times in Japan. In addition to Japanese, her books have also been translated into 13 other languages (Danish, French, Spanish, Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, English, Hebrew, Swedish, Thai, Arabic and Korean). Kathrin Schärer lives and works in Basel.

Reviews

Once upon a time there was a hedgehog - Children's Verses (2007)

“You can't get enough of the pictures by Kathrin Schärer. At first glance, some remind you of the great Wolf Erlbruch , but then you notice that the Schärers are rounder, softer, more playful, even if the handling of details such as fur, the subtly used collage elements and the alternation between coarse and fine lines are the same as those of Erlbruch obviously owe a lot. "

The town mouse and the country mouse (2008)

“In addition to the funny and loving text, the bold illustrations by Katrin Schärers, who like to play with unusual formats, detailed images, close-ups and wide-screen scenarios, are particularly impressive. She alternates between detailed elaboration and a background indicated with just a few lines. Her talent for drawing is particularly evident in the sketchy background. You can literally hear the people rushing and the wheels of the suitcase trolleys rolling over the pavement. Sometimes, especially in the city, people are just tall, threatening black silhouettes. But despite all the hectic pace, there are also poetic elements in the city, for example on the river, where everything appears gray in the morning mist and the barge chugs across the river. "

- Rolf Brockschmidt : It's best at home in the Tagesspiegel of July 6, 2008

Johanna on the train (2009)

“Schärer stages the book as a game with lust and imagination. Each page brings new ideas, wrong turns, so: opportunities. At the same time, however, it also shows the hardship behind every creative process. Last but not least, the sober pencil drawings on the work table tell of this, on which the colorful, lively pictures of Johanna im Zug emerge step by step until the finished book, also drawn in pencil, lies on the work table. And a whole new story begins. "

- Silja von Rauchhaupt : Now leave us alone, author! in the FAZ of October 14, 2009

"Kathrin Schärer takes children and adults on a tender, funny journey through pictures to the happy country that tells of drawing."

- Angelika Overath : Draw me! in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung from January 6, 2010

“The further the plot progresses, the more the creative space depicted in detailed black-and-white drawings fades into the background and frees up space for the painterly depicted world of fiction in fiction. When Johanna and her creator invent words and characters and spin the story further, the picture book gives children insights into the dazzling nature of fiction. With an attentive eye for the adventures that a train journey entails, Kathrin Schärer gives a well-known motif very individual traits in her picture-rich story. "

Grandma, Emma, Mama (2010)

“For the illustrator Kathrin Schärer, whose equally wonderful picture book Johanna im Zug was nominated for this year's German Youth Literature Prize, these stations are the best opportunities for light-handed, lively animal studies in her own way between overdrawing and reduction. (...) Grandma Emma Mama is a wonderful picture book about freedom and care. And it is a book of longing for an instance in the life of children that combines the knowledge and considerations of adults with the freedom not to lose serenity in the small steps of bringing up them. For grandparents who can share everyday life with their grandchildren and who don't always find it difficult to be drawn into trust or a conspiracy. For grandparents who don't live an hour's drive away, but next door, around the corner or in the same stinky flower bush. "

- Fridtjof Küchemann : Together in the Schneckenfelsenhöhle in the FAZ from January 7, 2011

That's how it went! No so! No so! (2011)

“Badger, bear and fox argue that the tatters fly. Everyone has their own truth - until the squirrel in the role of the innocent observer tells how it really was. Children have to learn to find their way out of quarreling, but luckily Kathrin Schärer wants to entertain her readers more than educate them: The dynamic images in warm brown and gray tones are hilarious. "

well we all (2012)

"Schärer's pastel figures are wonderfully flexible, animal posture and movement, with human facial expressions and a very human character."

- Karl-Heinz Behr : Donkey's ear from December 2012
