Katy Grannan

Katy Grannan (* 1969 in Arlington , Massachusetts ) is an American photographer .

Life

Grannan grew up in the city of her birth and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Humanities . She then attended the School of Art at Yale University , where she studied with the street photographer Tod Papageorge, among others . Here she graduated with an MFA .

In 1998, Grannan became known through a series of portrait photographs of people she had searched for and found through newspaper ads. Over the next eight years she worked in this way in the northeastern United States and produced several series of portraits, each of which had a title related to the local situation. The photo book Model American was created in 2005 .

After moving to California in 2006, Grannan began with street photography, in which she very often places the people in front of a very bright background or lets the sun shine directly on them. The photographs, taken in San Francisco and Hollywood and later along Highway 99 , were published in two photo volumes. At the same time, she also made a film about the residents of the settlements along the Central Valley of California called The Nine .

According to her own statements, Grannan's work was influenced by female photographers such as Nan Goldin and Diane Arbus .
