history

The company's roots go back to the year 1716, when Johann Georg Katz built a sawmill in Weisenbach in Baden, which was later used to manufacture telegraph poles and railway sleepers. In 1892 Robert Sputh invented the cast fiber coaster in Dresden . Casimir Otto Katz took up this idea in order to put the wood waste from his own production into a meaningful use in Baden. In 1903 he established the product line of cast fiber coasters - the first beer mat of today's format was born.

The first automatic beer mat printing machine was developed as early as 1930 with a capacity of 30,000 pieces per day. In 1969 the next invention came into use: a beer mat printing and punching machine. This innovation allowed the combined printing and die-cutting of the beer coasters with a capacity of one million pieces per day. In 1975 the Katz factory switched from letterpress to offset printing , regular investments ensured that the large-scale punching systems and fully automatic packaging lines were always up to date.

In 1978, Katz International Coasters was acquired by the Pfleiderer Group . In 2001, the takeover of the branches in Quarmby / Great Britain and Waterlomat in Belgium resulted in an international group of companies, which was further expanded in 2006 by incorporating the Kurprinz company in Großschirma / Saxony. The falling beer consumption and the consequences of the financial and economic crisis resulted in the Katz Group filing for bankruptcy in April 2009. Another world market leader took over the company in September 2009: the August Koehler AG paper mill from nearby Oberkirch in Renchtal . The wood pulp board producer and beer mat manufacturer was integrated into the Koehler Group as an independent organization; the Kurprinz company in Großschirma was closed in mid-2011. In 2010, 31 new employees were hired at the Weisenbach location, and the parent company released several million euros for investment measures.
