The August Koehler SE paper mill is a paper manufacturer with headquarters in Oberkirch , Baden-Württemberg (August Koehler SE paper mill), as well as other plants in Kehl (Koehler Kehl GmbH) and Greiz (Koehler Greiz GmbH & Co. KG). On October 1, 2009, the then insolvent Katz Group in Weisenbach (today: Katz GmbH & Co. KG ), the world market leader in the production of beer mats , was taken over by Koehler. The Koehler Group currently employs around 1850 people.

In 2018, the company generated sales of around 900 million euros with sales of over 500,000 tons of paper in the thermal paper , carbonless paper, fine paper, decorative paper , colored paper and cardboard as well as products made from pulp board. The Koehler Group is the world market leader in the field of thermal paper and beer mats. In 2019 the area of flexible packaging papers was added. In addition to standard papers, Koehler is developing barrier papers together with TU Darmstadt. These papers are supposed to take over the function of plastic and other barrier materials. The aim is to replace plastic in flexible packaging with paper.

The parent company of the August Koehler SE (Koehler Paper Group) paper factory is Koehler Holding GmbH & Co. KG (Koehler Group). In addition to the Koehler Paper Group, the holding company also includes the Koehler Energy Group (Koehler Renewable Energy GmbH).

history

In 1807 Otto Koehler, a merchant from Karlsruhe , acquired the Oberkirch "paper mill in Loh". The transition from paper scooping to machine production took place in 1865 when the first paper machine was installed in the factory. In 1922, the family-owned August Koehler AG paper factory was founded, which in the same year acquired a stake in W. Euler paper factory GmbH & Co. KG . In 1963, Koehler had the carbonless paper "reacto" patented, which generated high sales. In 1988 the August Koehler AG paper mill's largest factory to date was built in Kehl. Thermal papers, carbonless papers and decorative papers are produced here on three paper machines. Today the family business is run in the eighth generation.

In 2012 the legal form was changed from an AG to a European company (Societas Europaea, SE).

In June 2014, Koehler Energie GmbH (HKW Oberkirch) was merged with the August Koehler SE paper mill.

From January 1992 to September 1995, the August Koehler SE paper mill was involved in the carbonless paper cartel (SD paper). This is clear due to a decision of the European Commission , which she has unsuccessfully challenged and which has therefore imposed a fine of € 33.07 million on her. The Federal Court of Justice decided on this in 2011, but not yet finally, on the claims for damages of around EUR 220,000 asserted by the allegedly injured party (ORWI) ; the civil process was ended by a settlement.
