Max Gabriel (born September 21, 1861 in Elbing , West Prussia ; † February 8, 1942 in Amsterdam ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Gabriel, who came from a German-Jewish family, attended grammar school in Leipzig and then received musical training from Carl Reinecke and Salomon Jadassohn at the Leipzig Conservatory . From 1881 he was successively Kapellmeister at the theaters of Stolp (1881–1882), Frankfurt an der Oder (1882–1883), Memel (1883–1884) and Riga (1884–1885), at the Königsstädtisches Theater in Berlin (1886–1887 ), at the Residenztheater in Hanover (1890–1891) and at the Carl-Schulze-Theater in Hamburg (1892–1893). From 1893–1901 he lived in the USA , returned from there to the Centralhallen-Theater in Hamburg (1901–1902) and was then director of the Rembrandt-Theater in Amsterdam (1904–1907). Afterwards he was director at the Residenztheater in Frankfurt am Main and at the Stuttgart Schauspielhaus . 1910–1912 he was Kapellmeister at the Berlin Theater des Westens . From 1913 he again directed the Rembrandt Theater in Amsterdam.

He was married to the singer Marie Severin.
