Cat cafés are cafés where you can order coffee and cake like in a normal café, but where you can also find house cats in the guest room .

origin

The concept originally comes from Asia . The first cat café opened in 1998 in Taipei , Taiwan . This cafe in Taiwan has become a popular tourist magnet for visitors from Japan and around the world. Although the origin of the cat cafes is in Taiwan, the concept became famous mostly in Japan. The first cat cafe opened there in 2004 in Osaka. Due to Japan's land area and population, many Japanese live in very small apartments that do not allow pets, making the cat cafes a popular haven for young workers who yearn for company and socializing. The first café of its kind opened in Tokyo in 2005. Since then, cat cafés have been booming in Japan and between 2005 and 2010 79 of these cafés opened there.

Cat cafés in Germany and Austria

There has also been a cat café in Vienna since 2012 . All of the German cat cafés opened so far can be found in large cities: First there was the cat café in Munich (2013). Later cat cafés opened in Berlin (2013), Leipzig (2013), Cologne (2014), Aachen (2015), Hanover (2015), Nuremberg (2016), Karlsruhe , Hamburg (2017), Bielefeld (2017) and in Düsseldorf.

Animal welfare

In Germany, requirements must be complied with in order not to endanger either food hygiene or animal welfare. Among other things, the cats must have a protected space that is also accessible when the café is open, into which they can withdraw if necessary and to which guests have no access.
