Kauaeranga Valley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kauaeranga Valley is a 15 km long valley in the Coromandel Range in the Waikato region on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Kauaeranga Valley is named after the Kauaeranga River and begins 13 km east of the city of Thames . The Department of Conservation (DOC) operates a Kauaeranga Visitor Center there .

history

The Kauaeranga Valley was once full of large, stately kauri trees , but between the 1870s and 1920s, as in other parts of the Coromandel Peninsula , systematic overexploitation in the valley and almost all kauri trees felled and with it the character of the valley changed. The river was dammed in numerous places so that the large, heavy trunks could be brought to the valley with the dammed water. Over 40 dams were created, some of which can still be viewed in their remains. In other places, other modes of transport were created, as well as small railways. Today there are only a few kauri trees left. Rata, Rimu and Tara are the predominant tree species in the valley today.

use

In the valley that is part of the Coromandel Forest Park , there are several campsites on either side of the river. The courses are run by the Department of Conservation . In addition to swimming, fishing, hunting and hiking, the valley with its side valleys is also suitable for mountain biking .

The Kauaeranga Valley is also the starting point for The Pinnacles , a 759  m high mountain with several mountain peaks.
