The Kauai Plantation Railway is a 4 km long narrow gauge railway on the island of Kaua'i from Hawaii with a track width of three feet (914 mm).

history

The Kauai Plantation Railway opened in January 2007 as the first railroad built in Hawaii in 100 years. It runs on an eight-shaped circuit on the Kilohana plantation of Gaylord Parke Wilcox (1881-1970), the manager of the Grove Farm Plantation. His sister Mabel Wilcox, heiress of the Wilcox estate, set up the Grove Farm Museum on their nearby country estate.

The route was designed by Boone Morrison, an architect who specializes in historical restoration. The train passes fields that are leased to farmers to grow taro , pineapple , papaya , rambutan , tobacco and coffee as well as hardwood trees. The rails were previously installed on the Soo Line Railroad in North Dakota . The 31,680 sleeper nails were hammered in by hand with a 5 kg sledgehammer. The narrow-gauge railways laid on Kauai until then had a smaller gauge of 2 feet (610 mm) or 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm).

So far they have been pulled by two diesel locomotives, while two Baldwin 0-6-2 steam locomotives, which were formerly used by the Honolulu Plantation Corporation on the island of Oahu and later in the Philippines , are undergoing a time-consuming general overhaul. There is a 1948 General Electric two-axle diesel-electric locomotive and a backup Whitcomb diesel-mechanical locomotive.
