history

The village of Kaupen is made up entirely of so-called Kaupen , several small islands in the Spreewald. This is where the place name comes from. The residents used to fish and later, after a decline in the fish population in the Spree, cultivated vegetables typical of the Spreewald . The oldest surviving building, the homestead Kaupen 8, was built around 1840. Kaupen used to speak only Sorbian, but the Sorbian language slowly disappeared from everyday language from the beginning of the 20th century. Kaupen was not previously run as a settlement, but belonged to the city of Lübbenau. In the topographical-statistical overview of the administrative district of Frankfurt adO from 1864, the village is not listed individually, but referred to under Lübbenau as "some [...] houses [...] built in the Spreewalde".

Historically, Kaupen belonged to the Calauische Kreis , after the area changes as a result of the Congress of Vienna , the Calauische Kreis was converted into the Calau district , which was located in the Frankfurt administrative district in the Brandenburg province . After the end of the Second World War, Kaupen first became part of the Soviet occupation zone and, from 1949, the GDR . During the district reform carried out in the GDR on July 25, 1952, Kaupen came to the Calau district in the Cottbus district . After the reunification , the Calau district was renamed the Calau district and finally dissolved. Since the district reform in Brandenburg in December 1993, Kaupen has been in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district .

Today the residents of Kaupen live mainly from tourism . In the village there are inns , holiday apartments as well as a paddle boat rental and a provider of boat trips. The Gasthof Kaupen 6 with the second oldest building in town burned down in August 2016, but was rebuilt.
