Kaweco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kaweco is a brand of the Nuremberg-based company h & m gutberlet gmbh, whose core competence lies in the manufacture and sale of high-quality writing implements and their accessories.

history

The Kaweco brand originated in 1883, when Messrs. Luce and Enßlen founded the Heidelberg penholder factory . There were pen holder made of wood and fountain pens produced, and gold feathers imported from A. Morton & Co. of New York.

In 1889 Heinrich Koch and Rudolph Weber took over the Heidelberg penholder factory. They then set up a production facility in Handschuhsheim outside Heidelberg . Products were given the brand names Perkeo , Omega and Kaweco and also bore the “HF” logo for Heidelberger Federhalterfabrik. A little later, the Kaweco brand also became the company name under which the products are still sold today.

The first Kaweco safety fountain pen was created in 1909. This was made under the patent KAWECO. DRGM 224101 registered and advertised.

Due to the high demand, sales were further expanded in the following years. Branches were set up in Berlin , Paris , Zurich and Vienna as well as international agencies. In 1911 the catalog showed a wide variety of fountain pens and filling systems. The first mentions of pocket fountain pens for women, officers and sportsmen can also be classified during this period.

In 1914, Kaweco took over A. Morton from New York, the oldest gold nib factory in the world. The systems were transferred to Heidelberg and our own gold nib production was set up. At that time, Kaweco employed 600 people and produced around 130,000 fountain pens a year. Therefore, in 1921, it was converted to a stock corporation. The product portfolio also grew, which is why lever fountain pens were added to production.

In 1929 the much smaller Baden penholder factory Knust Woringen und Grube (brand Aurumia ) from Wiesloch acquired the Kaweco company name, machines, inventory and patents. The brands and models of Kaweco and Aurumia merged. The logo that is still used today was created and is placed on almost all devices: "KA WE CO" in a three-part circle as a label.

During the Second World War the production was almost stopped, but could be restarted a few months after the end of the war.

Friedrich Grube senior died on May 5, 1960. His son Friedrich, his wife Liselotte and their two sons continued the business. The product range has been streamlined in line with contemporary tastes .

In 1971, Kaweco acquired the license for the 1972 Summer Olympics and presented the Sport model writing instruments with a special Olympic coin.

In 1994, the Nuremberg- based company h & m gutberlet took over the naming rights for "Kaweco" and launched a new series taking into account the 1935 Kaweco Sport design. The pocket pens came on the market as fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoint pens, mechanical pencils and pencils. Diplomat was won as an exclusive worldwide sales partner . This connection ended in 1999 when Diplomat von Herlitz was bought up.

Since then, Kaweco has been expanding its global sales under the umbrella of the h & m gutberlet company. Thanks to cooperation with country-specific distributors, Kaweco products are now available in more than 45 countries.
