Kazım Erdoğan (2010)

Kazım Erdoğan (born June 11, 1953 in Gökçeharman , Sivas Province ) works as a psychologist and sociologist in Berlin and is considered one of the leading experts on the integration of immigrants in Germany. The studied psychologist and sociologist has been leading Germany's first self-help group for men of Turkish origin , known as the “Fathers and Men Group” , since 2007 . Since then, the projects of Erdoğan and his non-profit association “Aufbruch Neukölln”, in which he is chairman, have been the focus of the media. In addition, in 2015 the director Bettina Blümner portrayed the group of fathers and men for the first time in a 90-minute film entitled “Crescent Truths”. For his long-standing commitment Federal President awarded him Joachim Gauck 2012 the Federal Order of Merit .

Life

Erdoğan grew up with seven siblings. His parents, who were illiterate, enabled him to go to boarding school in the eastern Anatolian city of Erzurum . As the first high school graduate and university graduate in his home village, he went to Berlin in 1974 to study psychology and sociology at the Free University . When he arrived in Germany, the then 21-year-old financed his life by lugging refrigerators and washing machines and working on the assembly line. In the first year of his entry, Erdoğan was in custody for deportation in West Berlin on September 25, 1974 because his passport and tourist visa had expired. The day before he was deported, the Free University of Berlin offered him a German course. The employee at the immigration office then waived expulsion and Erdoğan was able to continue his studies. After graduation, he worked for ten years as a secondary school teacher in Berlin-Tiergarten and then as a school psychologist in Schöneberg. Since 2003 he has been employed as a psychologist and social worker in the psychosocial service and advised until his retirement in 2016 on behalf of the Neukölln u. a. Parents and children in upbringing and family matters.

Based on his broad social commitment, Erdoğan was referred to as "Süpermann" by reporter Sonja Hartwig in an article in the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit". The Tagesspiegel also wrote that Erdoğan was "one of the record holders in Berlin when it comes to social engagement". In addition to his 8 hours in the psychosocial service, Erdoğan actually works up to 20 hours a day and is the source of ideas for many projects. He says of himself: "90 percent of my hard drive is full of projects."

Erdoğan is known as a gentle man and a loving father. He is married and has two daughters.

social commitment

In addition to the individual projects such as social legal advice, mothers 'groups, parents' meetings in daycare centers and schools, and the “Drinking Fountain” project, Erdoğan and the Aufbruch Neukölln association have set up many other projects. The more well-known projects are the fathers and men group, which are now in six different locations in Berlin, and the “Week of Language and Reading” project. In all projects, Erdoğan is always very important to meet people on an equal footing and "not to look down on anyone."

Erdoğan attests to society that more and more fathers are withdrawing from the upbringing and education of their children. But things are not looking good in other areas of society either: for this reason Erdoğan founded the group of fathers and men "so that they can participate in all areas of society". The fathers and men groups meet once a week to discuss topics such as violence, integration, tolerance, sexuality and addiction problems. The topics of conversation will be developed in consultation with the participants. There are several important goals. This includes strengthening the sense of community between people of different ethnic, religious and social origins, strengthening the exchange on women's and children's rights, developing joint activities “for a non-violent and democratic family and society” and providing information about the social and political system Germany.

The "Week of Language and Reading" took place in Berlin-Neukölln in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Erdoğan developed the idea further in 2012 and expanded it to all of Berlin. Week of Language and Reading in Berlin ”, over 1500 events - u. a. Readings in schools and daycare centers, cultural performances by artists and discussion rounds - organized with the support of 150 volunteers and the father's and men's group from Aufbruch Neukölln. One of the goals of the nine-day project was that “children and young people discover their linguistic expression with fun and games”.

Political

Erdoğan takes a differentiated stance with regard to integration policy. He is against the idea of the CSU to let immigrants sign integration obligations. Erdoğan does not believe that these agreements will work. He himself learned German because he wanted to stay “in this beautiful country”. You have to convince the immigrants instead of forcing them. Erdoğan and his association Aufbruch Neukölln campaign for equality between men and women. The topic is also an important part of the self-help project fathers and men group. The project regularly gives rise to ideas for political actions: In January 2016, against the background of violence against women on New Year's Eve in Cologne, the group called for a demo “siddete hayir!” (Translation: “No to violence”) in North Neukölln.

Erdoğan also took a clear position with a view to the Bundestag resolution on Armenia, which was passed on June 2, 2016. Erdoğan welcomed the resolution and saw it as the right path to reconciliation and reappraisal. The 63-year-old psychologist also criticized the fact that the history books in Turkey were too one-sided. "There is only talk of hero stories and where the Ottomans were everywhere."

Regarding the attempted military coup in Turkey in the summer of 2016 and the demonstrations in favor of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Germany, the psychologist said that these were people "who do not feel they belong here." They would rather identify with the President than with the Chancellor. He also criticized the massive arrests and dismissals of judges, police officers and other officials and feared a major conflict among the people within Turkey.
