After his brief work as an ambassador, Rajavi became involved in Switzerland against human rights violations in Iran and was considered a representative of the Iranian opposition movement “ National Council of Resistance of Iran ” (NCRI) founded by Banisadr and his brother Massoud in exile . He was gunned down in the street on April 24, 1990 while driving back from Geneva to his home town of Coppet .

The Swiss investigating judge Roland Chatelain confirmed the involvement of numerous high-ranking representatives of the Iranian government in the elaborately planned coup. As participants was Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani , the Intelligence Minister Ali Fallahian and later ambassador of Iran in Germany, Mohammad Mehdi Achundsade Basti called. As a result of these investigations, an international arrest warrant for Ali Fallahian was issued at Interpol 16 years after the murder of Rajavi.
