The number for identifying the hazard ( danger number , formerly Kemler number , originally officially French numéro d'identification du danger , English hazard identification number ) is an identification number that is uniformly defined for all dangerous substances . It is the upper number on the orange-colored warning signs ( danger signs ) affixed to all dangerous goods transports and describes the danger posed by the transported goods.

The lower number is called the UN number (substance number) - see: List of UN numbers

Function of the hazard number

The danger number is defined in the European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) or in the Règlement concernant le transport international ferroviaire de marchandises Dangereuses (RID).

The UN number and the danger number should always be communicated to the police / fire brigade control center in the event of an accident, as this enables them to better coordinate the help. The numbers (together with the ERI cards ) provide fire brigades and other authorities and organizations with security tasks with important information for the rapid recording of the hazard potential of substances and the initiation of correct measures.

The digits of the hazard number generally correspond to the dangerous goods class, with the exception of class 1 explosives , which - due to the risk of confusion - are marked with numbers for flammability (3, 4). The marking with 1 occurs only on the package itself, not on the transport vehicle.

Structure of the hazard number

The number consists of at least two to a maximum of three digits , which list the most important hazards emanating from the substance, possibly with an X in front for additional risk in connection with water (important for extinguishing operations). Combinations of different digits are possible. The repetition of a digit means an increase in the risk of this type.

The combination of the numbers indicate the specific dangers of the dangerous goods and are named according to their value from left to right. The first digit thus represents the main danger, the other digits are regarded as additional dangers.

If there is only one danger, the 2nd digit is replaced by a zero:

A doubled number indicates a particularly high risk:
