Ken-David Masur

Ken-David Masur (born 1977 in Leipzig ) is an American conductor born in Germany.

Kevin-David Masur was born in Leipzig as the son of the conductor Kurt Masur and Masur's third wife, the soprano Tomoko Sakurai. He began studying piano at the age of 6. He later received formal vocal training at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin , where he was taught by Thomas Quasthoff , among others . While his father was employed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , Masur attended the Westchester Music Conservatory, where he studied trumpet. He then attended Columbia University , where he founded the orchestra and choir of the local Bach Society and was its first music director from 1999 to 2002.

In Europe, Masur was assistant conductor of the Orchester National de France from 2004 to 2006 . Since 2011 he has been the first guest conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra . In the United States, Masur was Resident Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra from 2007 to 2011. In 2011 he became assistant conductor of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. In 2011 he received a conducting scholarship at the Tanglewood Festival [5] and made his conducting debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Tanglewood in July 2012 in a program in which he and his father shared the conducting duties. [6] He later became assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from the 2014-2015 season.

In May 2018 Masur conducted the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) for the first time as a guest conductor. The MSO immediately engaged him again for a second guest conductor appearance in September 2018. Based on these concerts, the MSO announced in November 2018 the appointment of Masur as the next music director with effect for the 2019-2020 season, with an initial contract for four seasons. This appointment marks Masur's first appointment as music director. With his appointment as MSO, Masur resigned from his post in Boston. In June 2019, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra announced the appointment of Masur as the next chief conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago with effect from the 2019-2020 season.

Masur is married to the pianist Melinda Lee Masur. You founded the Chelsea Music Festival and act as its artistic director. You have three children.
