Kenneth "Ken" Donald John Macdonald, Baron Macdonald of River Glaven Kt QC (born January 4, 1953 ) is a British lawyer and politician of the Liberal Democrats who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2010 .

Life

After attending Bishop Wordsworth's School, Macdonald completed from 1971 to 1974 a degree in philosophy , political science and economics at St Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford , followed by a postgraduate degree in law . After graduation, he was at the Bar Association (1978 Inns of Court ) from Inner Temple as a lawyer admitted. Subsequently, Macdonald, who was appointed crown attorney in 1997, specialized in criminal law and was also involved in the Criminal Bar Association , in which he has been a member of the executive committee since 1997 and chairman of the education committee since 1999 and between In 2002 and 2003 he was vice-chairman and in 2003 he was chairman.

In 2000, he became Rapporteur for the Crown Court and a member of the Lawyers 'Council, and between 2001 and 2002 he was Vice-Chair of the Public Affairs Group of the Lawyers' Association. In 2003 he was appointed by the Attorney General to succeed David Calvert-Smith as Director of Public Prosecutions and thus head of the Crown Prosecution Service and held this position until he was replaced by Keir Starmer in 2008. At the same time, he was a member of the Council for Sentencing Guidelines and member of the Committee for Criminal Procedure Law. During this time he became a Knight Bachelor in 2007 and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". In 2008 he also became a member of the Independent Commission on Juvenile Delinquency .

In 2010 Macdonald, who has been Visiting Professor of Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Trustee of the Index on Censorship since 2009 , was appointed Deputy Judge at the High Court of Justice for England and Wales .

By a letters patent dated July 12, 2010, Macdonald was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Macdonald of River Glaven , of Cley-next-the-Sea in the County of Norfolk . Shortly thereafter took place 20 July 2010 on its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house it belongs to the faction of the Liberal Democrats.
