Kenneth Peacock

Kenneth Howard Peacock (born April 7, 1922 in Toronto ; † November 22, 2000 ibid) was a Canadian musicologist , composer and pianist .

Life

Peacock studied piano at the Toronto Conservatory of Music with Alma Cockburn (1935) and Reginald Godden (1948–49) and also took private lessons with Mona Bates in Toronto (1938–39) and Michel Hirvy in Montreal (1950). At the University of Toronto he studied music theory with Healey Willan and Leo Smith (1941–43) and composition with John Weinzweig (1944–46). He continued his composition studies in 1950 with Francis Judd Cooke at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

During the time of his training, Peacock gave private piano lessons and performed as a pianist. From 1951 to 1972 he worked as a staff member at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the field of the music of the indigenous peoples of Canada and the music of ethnic minorities. He has published articles in magazines such as Alphabet , Bulletin of the CFMS , Ethnomusicology and Journal of American Folklore, and contributed to the music collections of Helen Creighton , Robert Klymasz and Alan Mills . Composers like Harry Somers and Violet Archer and singers like Alan Mills and Tom Kines used material from Peacock's collections.

A selection of his music ethnological recordings appeared on the LPs Indian Music of the Canadian Plains (1955) and Songs of the Newfoundland Outports (1984), as a musician he worked on the Songs and Ballads of Newfoundland (around 1956). Peacock was awarded the Order of Canada in 1982 and the Marius Barbeau Medal of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada in 1998.
