Kenneth Roth (born September 23, 1955 in Elmhurst , Illinois ) is an American lawyer and executive director of Human Rights Watch since 1993 .

Life

Roth's family originally comes from Germany; his grandfather worked as a butcher in Frankfurt am Main. His father was Jewish and fled the National Socialists to the United States in 1938. According to Roth, this developed an early interest in human rights issues.

Roth graduated from Brown University with a law degree, graduating with an MCL in 1977. He then attended Yale Law School , where he was awarded the Juris Doctor in 1980 . In the following year he received his license to practice law and worked as a litigator in the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison until 1983. He then worked as a federal prosecutor for the Manhattan federal attorney's office until 1987 . Among other things, he was involved in the investigation into the Iran-Contra affair in Washington.

After initially volunteering in human rights issues, Roth worked as a full-time employee of the human rights organizations Helsinki Watch and America's Watch . After their merger in 1987 to Human Rights Watch, Roth became deputy director of the organization. In 1993 he succeeded Aryeh Neier and became managing director. Roth also publishes on human rights issues, gives lectures and is regularly quoted in the media.

Roth is married and has two children. He lives with his family in New York.
