Black Desert (also Black Desert online ; kor. 검은 사막 Geomeun Samak is a "Black Desert") Sandbox - MMORPG of the South Korean developer Pearl Abyss that on March 3, 2016 in Europe for the PC was released. In March 2019, Black Desert Online was first released for the console.A mobile version for Android and iOS was released on December 11, 2019 .
Game mechanics
Black Desert is an online role-playing game that takes place in a fantasy world. At the beginning of the game, the player chooses one of the following 20 character classes: Lahn, Mystique, Rifleman, Warrior, Ranger, Berserker, Black Magician, Valkyrie, Magician, Tamer, Musa, Maehwa, Ninja, Kunoichi, Dark Blade Hashahin Guardian and Striker / Striker . The classes are determined according to gender and race.
In addition to main and side quests, there is a housing system, guilds , an active combat system and the possibility of farming, trading, crafting, fishing and taming horses, the so-called lifetask. Other special features include a. a weather system, day-night change and a parkour mode for climbing and exploring the area.
There is also an in-game shop in the game where you can buy small expansions and cosmetic items. Unlike in Asia, the European version is not free-to-play . The basic version must be purchased, but includes all game-relevant things. The cash shop is only limited in the European and North American versions.

Black Desert enables a huge game world with countless possibilities, including:
- An active combat system with manual aiming, attack combinations and evasive maneuvers.
- A parkour system with jumping and climbing functions to explore the area and interact with buildings or obstacles.
- A dynamic, global weather system : Temporary weather events such as fog , rain and a cloud-free sky take place regularly. Sometimes very large events such as typhoons are known to have a significant impact on the environment.
- A day and night system, which also affects monsters and NPCs .
- A housing system that ranges from tents to multi-story houses .
- Equipment that is not level-dependent and that can often be reinforced and upgraded.
- An animal husbandry system : animals (such as horses ) can be captured and tamed in the wild , used for locomotion, but also for (mounted) combat.
- A trading system with dynamic price development and transport trolleys.
- A friendship system with many NPCs, which unlocks extended functions when increasing (e.g. by completing quests).
- A knowledge database for discovered places, created objects and defeated monsters, which all characters of an account share. Knowledge of monsters increases e.g. B. the damage to them and the prey.
- Many automation options such as path finding or manufacturing.
development
The South Korean game developer Pearl Abyss , which was founded by Kim Daeil in 2010, began work in 2010 and among other things developed its own engine for the game. After Pearl Abyss, the publisher GameOn in Japan, on September 8, 2012 agreed to an agreement for publication in Japan, Pearl Abyss began to disclose game details to the public. In August 2013, Black Desert was presented at gamescom in Cologne , which caught the attention of many European and American publishers. The closed beta started in October and was only available to South Korean players due to an IP restriction . Different game elements were released for testing every day, such as the combat system, housing, player guilds , NPC interaction, trading system and PvP . A second closed beta test, also IP-restricted, was carried out for 3 weeks from April 22, 2014.
Black Desert was released in Europe on March 3, 2016. At the end of March the first big patch Mediah was published, another one, Valencia has already been published, the desert is there but sandstorms and tents are still missing. On January 25, 2017, the Magoria patch was installed on the EU servers, which made an underwater world accessible to players in order to recover further treasures. Furthermore, the Magoria Sea, with its different sea monsters and pirates, has been added, which can be conquered with the new guild galleys (8 cannons) and with the personal Epheria sailing boats (2 cannons).
