Kenneth "Kenny" Achampong (born June 26, 1966 in Kilburn , London ) is a former English football player of Ghanaian descent. As a tech-savvy winger , he was considered one of the greatest talents in the ranks of Fulham FC in the mid-1980s . The leap into the top English league did not materialize and after a few years in the second and third English leagues he did not return to professional football after 1993.

Athletic career

With a clear exclamation mark, the 18-year-old debutant Kenny Achampong attracted attention at the second-rate Fulham FC in the spring of 1985 . The talent trained in the club swirled on February 18, 1985 on the right flank the defense of the eventual champions Oxford United and scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 victory. When two more goals followed just four days later to beat Carlisle United 3-2 , a new star seemed to be born. The setbacks were not long in coming. Achampong, who had already been compared to Laurie Cunningham and retrospectively to Aaron Lennon , scored only twelve times in the following 79 league games until the end of the 1987/88 season, was rarely able to adequately use his skills in the team put together by coach Ray Lewington and most recently came through Role of the supplementary player no longer. Finally, at the end of the 1987/88 season, Achampong fell out with the coach and later moved to the London-based club Charlton Athletic .

After only ten league games for Charlton Athletic, Achampong moved on to the third division Leyton Orient , where he was very popular due to his closeness to his own audience and the technical skills that were above average for lower-class football. A special distinguishing feature in the two seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93 was Achampong's habit of outsmarting opponents who had already been played out at the same time and the time in which Leyton Orient played for promotion was better. He also gained national fame on December 28, 1991 in the game against Brentford FC , when Achampong was abused by numerous opponents after showing playful finesse, curiously even saw the red card from the later FIFA referee David Elleray and from the fans as " misunderstood hero ”was celebrated. Overall, Achampong seemed like a foreign body in lower-class professional football and since the relationship with coach Peter Eustace was also hypothermic, the engagement ended after the 1992/93 season. Previously, in the spring of 1993 , he had been appointed to the squad of the Ghanaian national team, where he was not used.

A follow-up employment with an English professional club did not follow; Achampong left the British Isles and tried his hand at trial training for Paris Saint-Germain on the initiative of Abédi Pelé in autumn 1993 . He played temporarily in Ghana and moved to Germany in 1998. Here he appeared at the beginning of the 21st century as a player and player- coach of the Hessian SG Walluf before he returned to London after the end of the 2008/09 season for the purpose of coaching.
