Roter Ellerstädter is the name of an old variety of peach ( Prunus persica ), for which the synonyms: Kernechter vom Vorgebirge and Vorgebirgspeachich are often used. The variety was found around 1870 by the winemaker Georg Fitz from Ellerstadt as a chance seedling in a group of peach seedlings that emerged from the seeds of a freely withered tree.

The fruits of the red Ellerstädter are hairy, typical for peaches, have a yellow base color when ripe, which changes into a red covering color on the sunlit side. The flesh is slightly greenish, almost white in color, which is directly on the stone takes on the red color of the stone - it's at maturity (late August / September ) freestone, juicy, sweet with a pleasant aroma.

The tree shows a low susceptibility to curl disease , which makes it suitable for extensive cultivation and cultivation in the home garden. It prefers a warm, protected location ( viticulture climate ), but is robust enough to be planted in rougher areas.

The variety is self-fertile and can be propagated from the stones of the fruit (from which the name "Kernechter ..." is derived).

Due to the propagation via seeds, there are now some subtypes of the Red Ellerstadt.
