The Kersenboogerd is a district of the Dutch municipality of Hoorn with around 20,950 inhabitants. In 1981, the construction of the district began on the area of the former municipality of Westerblokker . In the first few years it was mainly residents of Amsterdam who moved to Kersenboogerd. The name is derived from the Dutch words for cherries ( kersen ) and orchard ( boomgaard ) and is reminiscent of an extensive garden with cherry trees that used to grow here.

history

In the 1970s, the municipality of Hoorn began to buy land in what is now Kersenboogerd. After the development began in 1981, the city administration initially assumed lower growth and used larger areas as commercial forests . The construction of new houses, however, proceeded faster than expected, a year later 291 individual houses and a supermarket from the Vlaar company, initially housed in a temporary building, were completed. In 1985, more than 4,000 people lived in Kersenboogerd in just over 1,900 houses. Shortly afterwards, a branch of the Dutch state post office Posterijen, Telegrafie en Telefonie , a library and a health center with a pharmacy were opened. Since the 1990s, the number of residents has risen to more than 20,000. Various shops and public facilities, however, were closed, including the only secondary school in the district.

traffic

With the provinciale Weg N506 a main road leads through Kersenboogerd. Furthermore, the Hoorn Kersenboogerd station on the Zaandam – Enkhuizen railway line was opened in 1983 .
