The Kerstfest stamp is an unofficial German postage stamp from 2016, of which only a few were in circulation and which is therefore one of the most valuable and sought-after stamps internationally. It is named after the spelling error "Kerstfest" instead of "kerstfeest".

background

The Kerstfest stamp was to be issued by Deutsche Post on November 2, 2016 as a Christmas stamp with the name Christmas balls at 70 cents with the Christmas greeting ("Merry Christmas" in several languages), because of the spelling mistakes it contained (Kerstfest instead of kerstfeest with a capital K and only two e and Jul with a capital J instead of a small j) but withdrawn and reprinted before sale. In this version, the stamp never became an official postage stamp, the already completed production was officially destroyed. The newly printed stamp without spelling mistakes went on sale on November 30, 2016. Some stamps of the withdrawn edition were nevertheless sold by a few post offices and thus came into circulation. According to Philaseiten.de, a total of 72 stamped Kerstfest stamps as well as 3 foil sheets with 10 unstamped, self-adhesive stamps each are known. These brands were soon traded at top prices among philatelists . They are among the most valuable German postage stamps after 1945. At the 160th auction of the Felzmann auction house in Düsseldorf on November 9, 2017, a copy of the foil sheet with 10 unused stamps was auctioned for 45,806 EUR including buyer's premium and VAT.

Appearance of the brand

The motif of the Christmas stamp “Christmas ball” at 70 cents consists of a red Christmas ball with a hint of Christmas balls in the background. The words "Merry Christmas" are also printed in 9 languages. ( Michel catalog no. XX).
