As a ketonuria , acetonuria or acetonuria the occurrence of above normal quantities of ketone bodies ( acetoacetate and betahydroxybutyric acid ) or acetone as the simplest ketone in the urine , respectively. It can be detected there using test strips .
Healthy people can have ketonuria temporarily with a catabolic metabolism - such as after great physical exertion or prolonged starvation . Otherwise urine ketones show up
- Fever ,
- major injuries or operations,
- prolonged vomiting (such as hyperemesis gravidarum ),
- high fat content in the diet or
- Metabolic disorders such as insulin deficiency ( diabetes mellitus ) or increased glucagon concentrations .
In diabetics, ketonuria is a sign of inadequate therapy. In newborns it suggests a serious metabolic disease, since metabolically healthy newborns hardly ever have ketonuria, even with pronounced ketonemia .
