Keynote is a presentation program of the company Apple for the operating systems macOS and iOS . Similar to PowerPoint from Microsoft or Impress (from Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice ), it is used to create presentations. On the Mac, it is available from the Mac App Store. It has been available for the iPad since 2010 and for the iPhone and iPod touch since 2011 .

The name for the program goes back to the term keynote , which usually describes the opening lecture of an event. Especially among users of Apple's Macintosh computers , the keynote address is understood as the introductory lecture by Steve Jobs , the former CEO of Apple , which he held annually at the Macworld Expo and WWDC.

Keynote is easy to use. For example, auxiliary lines are automatically displayed when you drag an object over the film, which accelerates the exact placement at the same height or in "harmonious" spacing relationships.

While Keynote has a large number of templates, the animation functions were still very limited in the first two versions. However, this has changed since version 4, Keynote '08 at the latest. Keynote now has a new light table view function for arranging the slides, as is known from PowerPoint, for example. With the "intelligent animations" introduced in version 4, even clear slide shows can be placed on a slide. The option to animate objects on paths (in lines and curves) has also been added.

From version 2, there is the "moderator monitor" function, which shows the current slide on the screen during presentations, while the present slide, the next slide, notes and a clock (or clock) are available on the computer or on the presenter's iPhone / iPad / iPod. a countdown for the remaining speaking time) can be seen.

Keynote can import PowerPoint files (in both PPT and PPTX formats) and export to PowerPoint Presentation , PDF ( Adobe Acrobat ), HTML, and QuickTime Video formats . Mathematical formulas can only be created and transferred to Keynote using other programs such as TeXShop , MathType , LaTeXiT or the Grapher program supplied with macOS.

Since Keynote '09 there has been the function of automatically animating images, shapes or texts that are contained in two consecutive slides in a transition (Magic Move). There is also a program for iPhone and iPod touch that you can use to control Keynote (Keynote Remote).

With the introduction of Keynote 6.0 (also known as "Keynote '13"), numerous functions were removed in favor of better compatibility with the iOS version, which led to problems with presentations created with previous versions. While Keynote '13 is easier to use, professional users criticized the lack of functions and compatibility. Some users have switched to installing Keynote '09 and Keynote '13 in parallel in order to continue working with older presentations without having to adapt them to the new version.

The main reason for the disappearance of the old functions was the creation of a “common basis” for the further development of the Mac and iOS version together with the browser version “Keynote for iCloud ”, which was also presented in 2013 . With the previous updates for Keynote '13, Apple has started to gradually reintroduce old functions, with these being implemented equally on all platforms .

Since 2016 it has been possible to invite several people with a link to work on a presentation on different devices at the same time.

Since March 31, 2020 (version 10), Apple has been using the version numbers of the app uniformly for all platforms.
