Honi ( Georgian ხონი , χɔnɪ ) is a city in the region of Imereti in western Georgia .
Choni is a district town of the municipality of the same name . It is located in the Colchian Plain on the eastern bank of the Tcheniszqali .
In the Middle Ages, Choni was an important place for trade and handicrafts in Georgia . There was also a cathedral here and from 1529 to 1820/22 it was the center of the Choni diocese of the Georgian Orthodox Church (Catholic of Abkhazia). Choni received city status in 1921. From 1936 to 1989 the city was called Zulukidze after the revolutionary Aleksandre (Alexander Grigorowitsch) who was born there .
