Mian Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri (*  1941 in Lahore ) was Pakistani Foreign Minister from 2002 to 2007 .

origin

Kasuri comes from a well-known and politically traditional family in Punjab . His grandfather, the lawyer Maulana Abdul Qadir Kasuri , was a leader in the Indian National Congress and freedom fighter against English colonialism in the Indian subcontinent, which earned him years of imprisonment. Maulana Kasuri was married to Roshanara Begum , a member of the Loharu royal family . Maulana's firstborn Mian Mahmud Ali Kasuri, the father of Mian Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, was also a lawyer (studied at Cambridge , King's College ), a member of Congress until 1940 and sentenced to four months in prison in 1930. Ali Kasuri is widely regarded as the father of the civil rights movement in Pakistan. He was a founding member of the Pakistan People's Party and briefly a member of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's cabinet in 1973 .

Life

In 1977 Khurshid Kasuri was elected to the National Assembly. In 1990 he was appointed general secretary of the People's Democratic Alliance , which later became the social democratic Pakistan People's Party (PPP). In 1993 he left the Tehrik-e-Istiqlal ("Solidarity Movement") and joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N). He was elected to the National Assembly in 1997 in the constituency of the city of Kasur in the Indian-Pakistani border area (approx. 290,730 inhabitants) and chaired the Committee for Information and Media Development there . He was also a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee . As a member of the Pakistani delegation, he brought profound knowledge of international relations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at various international conferences and events and is accordingly well versed in the nuances of Pakistani foreign policy.
