Kibiti is a district in the Pwani region in eastern Tanzania . It is bordered by the Mkuranga district to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, the Rufiji district to the south and west, and the Kisarawe district to the northwest .

geography

The district has an area of ​​3854 square kilometers and around 116,000 inhabitants (as of 2019). The area lies on the Indian Ocean and includes the mouth delta of the Rufiji River. To the northwest it rises hilly, but hardly reaches heights of a hundred meters above sea level. Drainage is via the Rufiji River and small rivers that all flow into the Indian Ocean. The climate in the district is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation of around 1000 millimeters per year falls mostly in the months of November to May with a peak in April. The average temperature in the warmest month of February is 27 degrees Celsius, the coolest is July with around 23 degrees.

In the years between 2015 and 2018, the district was created by dividing the Rufiji district.

Kibiti consists of three divisions and 16 wards.

Facilities and services

  • Education: 76 elementary schools and twelve secondary schools are available for the education of young people.
  • Health: The population receives medical care from two health centers and 44 pharmacies. A hospital is under construction (as of 2020) Template: future / in 2 years.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: The district has a high share of the region's coconut production. Cashew nuts are the most important fruit for increasing farmers' income. In 2018, 136,000 chickens, 50,000 cattle and 9,000 goats were kept (as of 2018).
  • Fishing: In 2017, over 700 fishing licenses were issued and 220 fishing boats were registered. Around 900 tons of fish were caught from the sea, the yield from fish ponds was low.
  • Roads: The main road connection is the paved national road from Dar es Salaam to Lindi , which crosses the district from north to south.

politics

In Kibiti, a district council is elected every five years. In the 2015 elections, Khatibu Chaurembo was elected chairman.
