Rufiji is a district in the Pwani region in Tanzania . It is bordered to the north by the Kisarawe district , to the east by the Kibiti district and the Indian Ocean , to the south by the Lindi region and to the west and north-west by the Morogoro region .

geography

The district has an area of ​​9,485 square kilometers and around 130,000 inhabitants (as of 2019). The country is located in the coastal zone of the Indian Ocean and can be divided into two areas:

  • The valley of the Rufiji river . It flows through the district from west to east and flows into the Indian Ocean. Its valley is 7 to 35 kilometers wide. The area is repeatedly flooded in the rainy season.
  • The highlands that rise hilly on both sides of the river and reach heights of 700 meters above sea level in the south.

The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation of 800 to 1200 millimeters per year falls mostly from November to May. The temperatures fluctuate from 20 to 33 degrees Celsius. The coolest month is July and the hottest is February.

history

Rufiji has been the seat of a local government since 1926. Rufiji was declared a district in 1982. Between 2015 and 2018 the district was divided. The north-eastern part was declared an independent district of Kibiti.

Administrative division

The district is divided into three divisions and thirteen parishes (wards) (as of 2018).

population

The population increased from 94,626 in the 2012 census to 106,227 in 2017.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 45 elementary schools and nine secondary schools in the district.
  • Health: There are three health centers and 24 pharmacies for the medical care of the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Around 95 percent of the population is employed in agriculture and fishing, and five percent are employees in administration or in private organizations.

  • Agriculture: The main crops for personal use are corn, rice and cassava , cashew nuts, cotton and sesame are also grown for sale . In 2018, 55,000 cattle, 50,000 chickens and 10,000 goats were kept.
  • Fishing: Fish farming in ponds brings a yield of 300 tons per year (as of 2018).
  • Roads: The main road connection is the paved national road from Dar es Salaam in the northeast to Lindi in the south.
  • Rufiji Dam : In 2019, the construction of a hydropower plant with an output of two megawatts on the Rufiji River began. The first expansion stage of the power plant is scheduled to go into operation in 2022 Template: future / in 2 years.

politics

In Rufiji, a district council is elected every five years. In the elections in 2015, ten of the 18 council members were elected by the “Party of the Revolution” ( CCM ) and eight by the “ Civic United Front ” (CUF) party.

Attractions

  • Selous Game Reserve: In the southwest, the district has a share in this 50,000 square kilometer game reserve. The area was part of the central trade route for slaves and ivory, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 .
