Kies is an impact crater in the southwest of the front of the moon in the Mare Nubium plain , northeast of the Mercator crater and southeast of König . The crater is largely flooded by the lavas of the Mare , so that only a remnant of the crater ring is visible.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German astronomer Johann Kies .
