Johannes Kies

Johann Kies (born September 14, 1713 in Tübingen , †  July 29, 1781 there ) was a German astronomer .

life and work

Kies was educated in the Evangelical Abbey in Tübingen and studied mathematics and theology from 1730. After working as a vicar at various Swabian parishes , he entered the service of Prince Czartoryski in Warsaw.

On the recommendation of Leonhard Euler , Kies was employed at the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences on November 22, 1742 . There he was appointed professor of mathematics and physics and in 1743 as an astronomer at the academy and the Berlin observatory ; on February 13, 1744 he became a full member of the Academy. While he was in the position of observatory in Berlin , Jérôme Lalande was added, who headed the observatory from 1752; In 1750, together with Nicolas Louis de Lacaille , who was at the Cape of Good Hope , he determined a more precise value for the solar parallax through synchronous observations of Mars .

On September 20, 1754, Kies was promoted from full to foreign academy member and returned to Tübingen. There he took over the post of professor of mathematics at the Collegium illustre as well as that of a librarian in the university library ; In 1760, 1766/67 and 1775 he was rector of the university . A portrait from the 18th century hangs in the Tübingen professors' gallery .

The moon crater Kies bears his name in honor of Johann Kies .
